Can Negre was an old 17th-century farmhouse that Josep Maria Jujol extensively renovated to adapt it to the style of its owner, Pere Negre. The undulating forms, religious symbols and strident colours suggest the rich interior world of the architect. Another of the emblematic houses of the town is the so-called Torre dels ous (tower of eggs) by the people of Sant Joan. The officially named Torre de la Creu (tower of the cross) comprises five cylinders of different sizes and heights that make up the perimeter of this stately home.
The architect, Jujol, maintained a strong friendship and affinity with the people of the town, becoming the municipal architect for the last twenty years of his life.
From the Jujol Center – Can Negre, the Jujol Itinerary is carried out, where you can visit these two magnificent modernist houses with a guide, including other elements of the Jujol’s “experiment”, such as Torre Jujol, Casa Rovira or Casa Serra- Xaus. We will also see interventions in the Parish Church of Sant Joan Baptista and other details in this route guided by the modernist heart of Sant Joan Despí.
Since 2010, the Municipal School of Art has been located at the Center Jujol – Can Negre, teaching classes of different artistic disciplines. As an artistic and cultural highlight of the city, the Center Jujol – Can Negre offers other activities, routes and exhibitions such as, for example, the Cultural Walk through the historical masts of Sant Joan Despí, the Cultural Walk along the banks of the Llobregat River, the workshops familiars “The Magic of Trencadís”, “The detectives and the hidden well” or “The Romans arrive at Sant Joan Despí!”.
