Jujol, imagined architecture

From October 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027.

Opening: Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 8:00 p.m.

Between utopia and reality in Sant Joan Despí.

The imprint of Josep Maria Jujol (1879-1949) in Sant Joan Despí is inseparable from the identity of the municipality. Emblematic buildings such as the Torre de la Creu or Can Negre show the genius of a unique architect, capable of transforming matter and space with overwhelming creative freedom. However, the urban landscape that we know today is only part of his creative drive. There is another Sant Joan Despí: the one that Jujol projected on paper and that was never built.

This exhibition invites you on a journey through absent architecture. For the first time, an exceptional selection of plans, drawings and sketches from the Historical Archive of the College of Architects of Catalonia (COAC) in Tarragona, depository of part of the architect’s legacy, is exhibited. These documents, true works of art in themselves, reveal church projects, house renovations, the urban projection of Samontà, fountains and ornamental details that history, lack of budget or the circumstances of the time left undone.

To delve into these unrealized projects is to discover the purest and most daring Jujol. Without the limitations of physical construction, the architect’s stroke flies free, showing the absolute mastery of color, line and sacred and popular symbolism. These pieces are not fragments of failures, but witnesses to an inexhaustible creative universe.

Through this tour, the exhibition not only claims the heritage value, but also directly challenges us: what would Sant Joan Despí have been like if Jujol’s dream had been completed? Between utopia and reality, we invite you to discover the beauty of an architecture that, despite not having erected walls, continues to vibrate with the same strength as on the first day.
